An alternative to AP dip?

Now then,

Well its happened again. Bloody AP DIP. The problem is that its in a little tin, and it constantly dries up, a bit of a pain considering it costs about £20.00 a go. So I have tried hammering the lid back on, storing he tin upside down, no good, still ends up really thick with a hard skin on it.

So I bought a big glass Jar, with a steel screw on lid. I put the dip in that, thinking it might work. I thought wrong. It still has a thick skin and I cant get the bloody lid off. It has welded in place, ive tried everything from soaking in terps, chipping away with a Stanley knife, I even had a go with a hack saw. Thoroughly pissed off with it.

So, im going to get a drill, make a hole in the top and put it in a golden syrup tin....once its gone im never buying it again.

I need an alternative quick shade method, that doesnt involve arseing about mixing floor polish and obscure inks etc.... Im thinking i'll base paint the figures, then gloss varnish, then ink, then matt varnish. Ive heard this works, as the gloss helps the ink run into all the creases etc and it doesnt sit on the flat areas?

Anyone got any ideas?

Steve.

  1. Making up the Klear/ink mix isn't that difficult if you have a working mix recipe from someone else. My main mix is 40 drops of MagiColor Earth Brown and 5 drops of MagiColor Quasar Black in 100ml of the Pledge multi surface wax. It lasts me ages.

As an alternative, you could do the Pledge/Klear coat then ink over that.

Another option I've seen people use is water based floor varnish/stain (AP stuff is just repackaged spirit based varnish/stain after all).

  2. Steve, try medium for your paints. I found that modern Lahmiam Medium from GW is working wonders with their washes. Undilluted wash dirts everything. Dilluted with Medium it just flows into recesses and main colour is just slightly darker then before. I usually paint on washed areas but it is not really necessary, especially for pure wargaming pieces.

  3. I've had the same problems, and hit on a water based furniture decking oil:

  4. My can lived on the shelf for two years, and was fine when I opened it up again. Maybe you just had a defective sample?

    1. Its my 4th can of the stuff, it always dries up. I normally cut the thick skin off it then dilute it with white spirit to get it usable again.

Its a pain to use, although I like the results.... Water based sounds like a much better option to me....
